Airport Security , High Reliability , and the Problem of Rationality

چکیده
The events of September 11, 2001, have raised troubling questions regarding the reliability and security of American commercial air travel. This article applies the concepts and logic of highreliability organizations to airport security operations. Contemporary decision theory is built on the logic of limited or buffered rationability and is based on the study of error-tolerant organizations. The concept of high-reliability organizations is based on the study of nearly error-free operations. For commercial air travel to be highly secure, there must be very high levels of technical competence and sustained performance; regular training; structure redundancy; collegial, decentralized authority patterns; processes that reward error discovery and correction; adequate and reliable funding; high mission valence; reliable and timely information; and protection from external interference in operations. These concepts are used to inform early-stage issues being faced by both local airports and the newly established Transportation Security Administration.

Airport Security Versus Patient Security: The “Sickurity” Problem
The massive restrain security measurements at the airports very much impress the health status of the healthy and sick passengers alike. The security check is undisputedly a harassment – the confiscation of fluids, the limited movement on the airplane results in a stressful situation and put a harmful effect on healthy traveler and an even more harmful one on the sick. This kind of problem coul...

X-Ray is an ionizing electromagnetic radiation with a wide spectrum. A setting where this radiation is widely used is airport security units. This study was conducted to measure the level of momentary exposure to X-Ray in operators and personnel working in security gates of Imam Khomeini airport. In this cross-sectional study, the X-Ray machines used in security gates of Imam Khomeini airport a...
متن کاملModel of Reliability of Security Control Operation at an Airport
Preliminary communication The aim of the operation of the security control system at an airport is the prevention of the introduction of forbidden objects to the restricted area of the airport or onto the plane. All passengers and their luggage undergo security control. The security control system is a very specific system. On the one hand, the security control must be performed effectively so ...
متن کاملDesigning airport checked-baggage-screening strategies considering system capability and reliability
Emerging image-based technologies are critical components of airport security for screening checked baggage. Since these new technologies differ widely in cost and accuracy, a comprehensive mathematical framework should be developed for selecting technology or combination of technologies for efficient 100% baggage screening. This paper addresses the problem of setting threshold values of these ...
متن کاملIncorporating Wind Power Generation And Demand Response into Security-Constrained Unit Commitment
Wind generation with an uncertain nature poses many challenges in grid integration and secure operation of power system. One of these operation problems is the unit commitment. Demand Response (DR) can be defined as the changes in electric usage by end-use customers from their normal consumption patterns in response to the changes in the price of electricity over time. Further, DR can be also d...
